The relationship between effort and value is complicated as you’ve outlined. It’s definitely not linear. Some of the most complex situations and best designs I’ve worked on in my career take the most effort, especially upfront, and I think that’s the phase most often seen as wasteful, why are we putting effort into to design and planning when we know the issue and should have a solution? Well it’s easier to modify a proposed design than a developed solution.

So take the time, put in the effort and just make sure your effort continues to scale into production and real world changes.
