Thanks for the post, John, and the carpenter metaphor really hits home the value of sustained craft development & growth mindset. Btw the thought exercise that Rebecca Murphy suggested is a good example of the value of *prospective hindsight* (the same philosophy behind a pre-mortem exercise). A couple of thoughts crossed my mind after reading the piece:

- “Fooled by randomness” by Nassim Taleb. The world is more random than we would like to believe.

- It does take being intentional to increase the chances of surfing that randomness for the good.

I have seen a lot of senior management at large traditional laggard corporations and service providers espousing the methods of 2000 while slowly declining in share price. They are profitable enough for now but for some reason slow decline makes them worse rather than motivating them to get better.

After a change to more interesting work, but more laissez faire management, this post was a breath of fresh air.

The conclusion here and my experience in Science share a need for better awareness of out of the box factors: bias, unseen and conflated issues. There’s only so much of the story you can tell in a few paragraphs. It’s reasonable to expect that, as there are here, there’s more to the story when presented with unusual results. The world isn’t as simple or black and white as we assume.

Tks, John! This post so easy to relate. I guess we get more confortable with this reality as long as we're opened to learn with it. Sometimes the change is so easy to explain after it happens, and so hard when we're in the middle of it. The shift of perspective helps after we live it.
